Most of us have no idea
what we're paying for.

The average American is enrolled in more than eight active subscriptions. Most can recall maybe four. The rest — old free trials that expired into recurring charges, gym memberships from a different apartment, that one AI tool we tried in March — keep drawing money quietly, every month, forever.

Existing subscription trackers either ask you to fill out an eight-field form for every entry, or demand your bank credentials so they can see everything. Neither is good. The first is tedious. The second is a different kind of cost.

Things we won't do.

A subscription tracker that itself feels predatory misses the whole point. Here's what we promise not to do — and what we built instead.

We won't ask for your bank credentials.

No Plaid. No "link your account." Subtle reads what you photograph — that's all the access it needs. Your transaction history stays yours.

We won't keep your photos.

Images are processed in-flight and discarded. We can't show them to you again because we don't have them. By design.

03.

We won't make Subtle hard to leave.

Cancel any time, in two taps, inside the app. No phone trees, no win-back forms, no "are you sure" loops. The exit is right where it should be.

04.

We won't sell ads. Ever.

The whole job of a subscription tracker is to reduce noise in your financial life. An app that runs ads on top is a contradiction. Subtle is funded by people who use it.

05.

We won't pretend our AI is perfect.

Every field comes with a confidence score. When the model isn't sure, we tell you — and ask. We publish accuracy numbers and update them. No magic. Just an honest tool that reads receipts.

Things people ask.

Subtle is built deeply into iOS. Share Extensions, Widgets, Siri shortcuts, Visual Intelligence integrations — these are why the experience is fast. Building the same on Android would mean two half-built apps. We'd rather make one excellent thing.

If demand is overwhelming, we'll reconsider. For now: iOS only.

The iOS app is designed around device and iCloud storage. On the web, signing in with Google lets you save subscription records to Subtle cloud, where cloud records are minimized and de-identified wherever the service does not need a direct identifier.

If you click save, the original image is stored in R2 and served from a hard-to-guess public URL on cdn.subtle.page. Anyone with that image URL can view it; deleting the subscription removes the saved original.

We use strict access controls, HTTPS, and limited operational access to protect cloud data.

That's the entire premise. Subtle never asks for bank credentials, Plaid tokens, or transaction access. You photograph what you want it to know about — a receipt email, a billing page, a Face ID payment confirmation — and Subtle extracts the details. The image is processed and discarded. Your bank stays your bank.

The honest trade: Subtle won't auto-discover a subscription you've forgotten existed. It catches the ones you encounter — every billing email, every renewal screen, every "your card was charged" notification — and turns them into records the moment you see them.

Two reasons. First, AI scans cost money to run — not a lot, but not nothing. Second, products that are free have to make money some other way: ads, data, lock-in. We don't want to be that. So we charge a small amount, transparently, and that's it.

Rocket Money requires you to link your bank account so it can scan every transaction. That's powerful — and it's also a third party with full visibility into where you eat lunch, where you fill up gas, what you bought at the pharmacy. Some people are fine with that trade. Others aren't.

Subtle never asks. You photograph the things you want it to know about, and that's all it sees. The trade-off is honest: less automatic discovery, more privacy.
